Matlab Info and Matlab Files

Using Matlab in Millikan/Andrew:

1. Find a computer in either one of the computer classrooms in Andrew, or use the "research computer"outside my office. Log on to windows using your Pomona account. (If you don't have one, go over the ITS and get one - you'll need your student ID number from whatever College you're attending, and tell them that you are in my class. It will take a week or so.)

2. Open Matlab by either clicking on the icon or by selecting it under "Programs" (which is found by holding down the "Start" button).

3. Set the "Current Directory" to some folder where you want to put all the Matlab files. This is important, otherwise Matlab doesn't know where to look for the functions you call, etc.

4. Downoad any files you want from this page, as described below. They should still be in the folder next time you log on.

Matlab files for dynamical systems:

Download these files by clicking on them. Put them in a folder and make that folder your current directory after opening the Matlab program. In order to use them in Matlab, you MAY need to open them with a text-editor, select everything, copy and paste into a new Matlab M-file.

• FindZeroExample.m Finds where a function is zero. Use with FindZeroFunction. Modify this file to suit your purposes.
• Iterates.m Computes N iterates of a given function starting with initial value x0. The function can use an optional parameter vector,par. This routine can deal with functions of as many variables as you want.
• Cobweb.m Draws a cobweb diagram of N iterates of a given function starting at an initial value x0. Uses "Iterates.m". You also need to specify the limits of the x and y values for the graph of the function.
• Orbit.m Plots the orbit of a function of one variable. Uses "Iterates.m". This routine only plots the orbit points, Xn, on the vertical axis and the iterates on the horizontal axis.
• OrbitDifference.m Plots the difference between two orbits of a function of ONE variable. This routine needs the name of the function, the number of iterates to be plotted, and two starting values: x0 and y0. The difference is plotted on the vertical axis against the iteration on the horizontal axis. Uses "Iterates.m".
• TwodOrbit.m Plots orbits of functions of two variables, x1 and x2. Uses "Iterates.m"
