Sister Institutions with Websites relating to
Community-Based Learning
For purposes of comparison, we looked briefly at our “sister institutions”, defined as those liberal arts colleges ranked as the top twenty in 2006 by the US News and World Report. By checking the websites of these institutions, we attempted to ascertain the form and extent of community-based learning activities that were immediately visible to a cyber-space visitor. The results are tabulated below:
The categories were determined as follows: “Courses” indicates that the institution has a set of courses designated as ``service learning” or “community-based learning”, and that this list was easily found with a quick web search.
“Center” indicates that the institution has some kind of CBL
center, and “Center Staff” indicates that this center employs at least two
full-time dedicated staff members.
“Recognition” indicates that the institution offers some kind of
recognition for CBL activities, either for students, faculty or alumni. “Internships” indicates that the
institution has set aside special summer, winter, or year-round internships to
support students engaged in CBL activities. “Speakers, conferences” indicates that the institution hosts
a speaker series or one or more conferences dealing with issues involving
engagement with the community and/or community-based learning activities.
