Recent service-sabbatical recipients and their projects at Elon
University include:
- Marion
Aitcheson, Office Manager for Elon Television - Aitcheson completed a
four-week Project Pericles service sabbatical in summer 2005 in her
hometown of Eisenach, Germany, where she conducted interviews and
collected video footage at the AWO-Kinderheim children's home.
- Lorraine
Allen, Director of Accounting - For ten days in August 2005, Allen helped
to remodel structures at a boy's camp in Village of Hope in Bucha, Ukraine
operated by the former Soviet Union. The Village of Hope is a ministry to
the street children of Kiev, Ukraine.
- Annette
Orbert, Associate Director of Admissions/Director of Minority Recruitment
- In July 2004, Orbert worked for the Allied Churches of Alamance County,
which provides emergency shelter and meals for the homeless and assistance
with overdue utility bills and medicine. She assisted with daily operations, interviewed
applicants for financial assistance, checked in residents for the shelter,
helped prepare meals, and did clerical work.
- Scott
Rivera, Gardener - In June 2005, Rivera worked for two weeks establishing
a stage area for the summer performances for the Sword of Peace, an
outdoor drama located near Snow Camp, in southern Alamance County.
- J.W.
Thompson, Irrigation Technician - In April 2005, Thompson repaired a
flood-damaged home with the North Carolina Friends Disaster Service in
Clyde County, North Carolina.
More recently, he assisted with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
