Recommended text: Pechenik, J. A. 2004. A Short Guide to Writing About Biology, 5/E, Longman
Class format: The class will meet once a week for an hour and a quarter and will be conducted as a reading group/seminar. Each week students will read a book chapter or review article and a journal article, and students will submit a short written summary of the reading. The first half of the semester will cover general background in bacterial pathogenesis. Students will be assigned to present highlights of the reading and lead discussion during class. For the second half of the semester, each student will select a specific bacterial disease and prepare a 30-min presentation on the pathogenic mechanisms associated with that disease. Diseases are to be selected from the following list (or another disease if approved by the instructor):
Tuberculosis
Anthrax
Helicobacter pylori
Botulism
Cholera
Legionnaire’s disease
Plague
Pathogenic E. coli
Lyme disease
Diphtheria
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Listeria monocytogenes
MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
Grading:
Paper summaries and other writing assignments 100 pts
Major presentation: 100 pts
Class participation, including discussion leading 100 pts
TOTAL 300 pts

Please Note: Late work is subject to a reduction in grade. Unexcused absences will result in a reduction of your participation grade.
