The program awards a total of $19,300 for two summers and one academic year of undergraduate research activity. This scholarship is intended to recognize and enable unusually talented undergraduates who are planning to pursue a career in scientific research or in medicine (Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. programs). The Program plans to select one Scholar who will begin their research activities in the summer of 2007. Eligibility Requirements: Sophomores with a GPA at or above 10.5 who have declared majors in the eligible fields and juniors whose GPA places them among the top 15% of majors in chemistry, molecular biology, and biology (this cutoff has varied but has been around 11.4 GPA for juniors) are eligible to apply if majoring in one of these sciences. Research proposals must be developed in consultation with a member of the Beckman Scholars Program mentor group (C. Cheney, EJ Crane, R. Garza, L. Hoopes, M. Johal, D. O’Leary, D. Martinez, C. Selassie, L. Seligman, and J. Wright). Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
