Instead of traditional gifts from a wedding registry, we would prefer that friends and family make a small donation to one of the following non-profit organizations.

Action Aids

Jessie's mother Terry has been a volunteer with ActionAIDS for almost a decade, during which time she has watched the organization grow and respond to the needs of the increasing HIV+ population in Philadelphia. This was part of her inspiration for traveling to East Africa in the 1990s to study AIDS education among NGOs and government agencies.

ActionAIDS is a Philadelphia-based organization in partnership with people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and works to sustain and enhance quality of life. Staff, volunteers and the board of directors are committed to including and assisting people from our heterogeneous community and are responsive to the dynamic needs generated by the epidemic.

Barbara Mary Wei-Gump Foundation

Peter's cousin Bill Wei established this small family foundation in loving memory of his wife Barbara, who we all miss very much.

The foundation's mission is to contribute to organizations that provide shelter and assistance to abused women and their children. To date, the foundation has supported Sojourner Truth House in Milwaukee, WI and Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, Allentown, PA.

Contributions may be made to The Barbara Mary Wei-Gump Foundation, c/o Marcia S. Kung • 226 W. Rittenhouse Sq., #2310 • Philadelphia, PA 19103 • www.bmwg.org

Children's Village Child Care Center

Children's Village provides high quality early childhood education. Peter's mother Marcia has long been involved with the Center because of its commitment to providing these services to families striving to balance working and family demands. (Marcia currently serves as Board Chair.) The majority of children come from the surrounding Chinatown community, and most of the Center's families are low income. In addition to child care and a quality early education program, there is Head Start, and a vibrant after-school program. Nearly all of the business of the Center is conducted in both Chinese and English and parent programs have at least two translators.

Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre Foundation

While Jessie was working at the Ford Foundation, she met Dwayne & Dušan, co-founders of DT-squared. She finds Dušan's work to be among the most inspiring and original choreography she's ever seen (and it's not just because he's Czech!), and she has decided to try to help his dance company survive the first few critical years in New York.

Founded in November 2002, The Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre Foundation Inc. exists to support the development and presentation of work by choreographer Dušan Týnek and public performances of the company. In September 2003, (DT)2 made its first public appearance as part of the Dancenow/NYC Fall Festival at the Joyce SoHo, followed by "Debut" in December 2003 and "Camera Illuminata" in December 2004.

Free Library of Philadelphia

Peter & Jessie's reception will be held at the central branch of the library, which, they agree, looked a lot bigger when they used to stop there on the way home from school.

Libraries are more important than ever to the people and communities they serve. People of all ages and backgrounds continue to look to libraries as places for discovery, as centers of knowledge, as community gathering spots, cultural magnets, and sources of civic pride.

Kensington Welfare Rights Union

The Labov extended family in Powelton Village includes John, Debby, and Tim Dowlin. Tim has been an activist and organizer with KWRU since it was founded in 1991, and has helped shape their unusual approach to street-level political engagement and economic reform.

The Kensington Welfare Rights Union is a multiracial organization of, by and for poor and homeless people. KWRU is a chapter of the National Welfare Rights Union dedicated to organizing welfare recipients, the homeless, the working poor and all people concerned with economic justice.

You can find more information at www.kwru.org, however KWRU would prefer that you send donations directly to:

Settlement Music School

For many members of both Peter & Jessie's families, music lessons at Settlement were a childhood fixture. More recently, Pete's sister Tana worked in their fundraising & development office; Jessie's childhood friend Andreia is now one of the core faculty teaching violin. Pete & Jessie feel it's particularly important to support institutions like Settlement given the cuts to funding for arts & music curriculum in the public schools.

Founded in 1908 as part of a social services center for newly arrived immigrants, Settlement Music School has evolved into the largest community-based school of the arts in America. Today, with six branches, Settlement serves more than 15,000 students of all abilities without regard to age, race, or financial circumstance. The school awards more than $1.35 million a year in financial aid to students in need.

S. W. Kung Family Fund at the Philadelphia Foundation

The fund was established two years ago to honor Peter's grandfather, who died in 2003 at the age of 98. Its focus has been to ease the plight of immigrants in need. It has given grants to the Cambodian American Senior Association and the Chinatown Clinic, a free clinic staffed by volunteer medical personnel to serve the Chinese and Indonesian communities.

Contributions may be made payable to the Philadelphia Foundation (1234 Market Street, Suite 1800 • Philadelphia, PA 19107 • www.philafound.org).

Please indicate "Kung Family Fund – Labov/Kung wedding" when donating so your contribution goes to the right fund, and so we can be sure to thank you!
